China retail has four major segments: hypermarket, supermarket, department store, and convenience store. French retailer Carrefour has about 160 stores in China, and plans to open 20-25 more this year. Wal-Mart has about 175 stores in China, and will open its first Sam's Club in Shanghai at the end of 2010.
